Our beliefs and attitudes can influence cancer outcomes if we believe it is to be so. My mother had thyroid cancer for 14 years and she outlived the other patients because of her strong will-power and motivation to live. I remembered the story about two patients whose diagnostic results were mistakenly switched by technicians and they were given conflicting prognosis for their illness. What happened was, the cancer patient who was told that the mass found in her chest was benign survived but the other patient who was told she had cancer but didn’t, died after a year.
It has also puzzled doctors for a long time, why do they often see two similar patients with the same degree of disease and receiving the same treatment, but experienced totally different outcomes? One will die within a short time while the other will live for years or decades. In the early 1970’s radiation oncologists came to realize that patients who had a strong will-power and a strong motivation to live usually outlived the ones who were discouraged and hopeless. This is based on the observation designed to focus on changing the emotional attitudes of patients from depression and hopefulness to a heightened passion for living.
It was found out that the patients who did this work and modified their beliefs and attitudes lived twice as long as those who did not. Our immune system is the primary defense against both infectious disease and cancer because natural killer cells attack and destroy abnormal cells including cancer and their level of activity is a good predictor of the outcome of cancer. Corresponding to this mechanism is the group of hormones and neurotransmitter that regulate our immunity, and the formation of new blood vessels as well as other healing mechanism in our body. Interestingly, it has been repeatedly proven that our emotional states have the power to influence those hormones and chemicals and this modulation of our immune system and other healing systems has been shown to correlate very intimately to specific emotions that’s why if you believe that you have cancer, you will have. For example, anxiety and depression increase our serum cortisol level which turns off the immune system and a state of hopefulness, enthusiasm about life. Relaxation, and purpose, on the other hand, stimulates our defense systems and is a powerful antidote to stress and it was proven that relaxation exercises produces the best outcomes because it will lead to the reduction of stress levels and boost your feeling of joy and serenity that will bring more joy and happiness into your reality.
Alternatively, try to identify the unhealthy belief that triggers the emotional distress, and change those beliefs, change your emotional self from the predictions of statistics or doctors by the power of positive thinking because if you change your lifestyle, and deepen your spiritual beliefs, the universe will respond by giving you the quality of life that will significantly improve your survival rate.
